CLIFFORD D. CONNER is a historian of science and a biographer of revolutionaries. He was educated as an engineer and has a doctorate from CUNY Graduate Center, where he taught the history of science.

Books he has written include A People’s History of Science, two biographies of French revolutionary and scientist Jean Paul Marat, as well as biographies of several Irish revolutionary leaders.

His talk at the Deerfield Progressive Forum on February 26 will be on his latest book, The Tragedy of American Science: From the Cold War to the Forever Wars.

This book, in its second edition, demonstrates how the direction of American science is determined by private profit rather than by the desire to improve the human condition. Big Science has been irredeemably corrupted by Big Money, threatening the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the medicines we take.
